Green award scheme for businesses in Huddersfield Town Centre

A new green business award has been developed for businesses in Huddersfield town centre to show off their environmental credentials and be in with a chance to win up to £250 funding towards environmental improvements.

The Green and Tidy Business awards have grown out of Huddersfield Town Centre Partnership’s existing Tidy Trader awards through a partnership between the Town Centre Partnership, Kirklees Council and the Green Business Network (GBN). There are now two awards, the new Green Business Award as well as the already well established, annual Tidy Trader Award.

The new Green Business Award was designed to raise awareness of environmental issues amongst businesses and to help them save money, for example by cutting energy and water use.

Help for this comes from the GBN which has developed environmental toolkits for businesses in the hospitality, retail, office and manufacturing sectors.

The toolkits have many suggestions to help businesses reduce their environmental impact and save money, as well as a list of the current environmental legislation relevant to each sector, and a list of local recyclers for different waste streams. Due to generous funding from Kirklees Council, the GBN is also able to offer free environmental audits to businesses in the town centre, and throughout Kirklees. In addition businesses entering the awards could benefit from publicity as we aim to produce case studies highlighting good environmental practice.
All businesses entering the awards will be entered in a free prize draw, with a chance of winning environmental goodies. The businesses that the judges agree are the top three environmental businesses overall will win £250, £150 and £100 respectively towards environmental improvements.

All entrants to the Tidy Trader competition will be awarded a Gold, Silver or Bronze certificate with the overall winner being awarded the Huddersfield Civic Society silver trophy. Prizes will be distributed at an award ceremony to be held later in September. All businesses will also be able to claim a free environmental toolkit or a free audit from the GBN.

The application process for the Green and Tidy Business Awards couldn’t be easier. A questionnaire will be arriving in the post in April.

For a chance of winning, simply fill in the questionnaire and send it back to Huddersfield Town Centre Management by Friday the 2nd May. If you have not received a copy of the questionnaire, please call the Huddersfield Town Centre Partnership on
