Christmas Christmas in Huddersfield Plant Sales Calling All Gardeners |
| Christmas 23.09.2009 Christmas in Huddersfield. With Christmas fast approaching, Huddersfield Town Centre Partnership are again looking for performers to help bring a festive feel to late night and weekend shopping in the run up to Christmas. The Partnership is looking for local performers to play on Thursday evenings, Saturdays and Sundays. Town Centre Manager Cathy Burger says ‘the town has traditionally benefited from brass bands and choirs playing and singing in the town. For the third year running we are offering performers the opportunity to be included in our Christmas brochure and have a listing on our website. We will also be happy to assist people with collection and street activity licenses’. Cathy added, ‘Christmas in Huddersfield is set to be better than ever. We have the Christmas Light Switch-on with The Pulse radio roadshow on Thursday 19th November with local hero, Patrick Stewart turning on the lights, followed by this year’s Festival Of Light on Friday 4th December. The fun doesn’t stop there either because the ever popular ice-rink is returning on 3rd December. Shopping during the run up to Christmas can be quiet a stressful business. We hope that by having plenty going on in the town the task will become more pleasurable and people will be encouraged to come to Huddersfield to shop’. If you would like to perform in the town please contact HTCPL on 01484 487933 or email htcpl@kirklees.gov.uk by Wednesday 14th October. Contact: Cathy Burger, Town Centre Manager. The festival is to take place at St George’s Square and will run from Thursday 13th to Saturday 15th August from 10am-6pm and Sunday 16th August from 11am-5pm. There will be local, regional and world food stalls, real ale and cider stalls, free cookery demonstrations and free children’s entertainment. New for this year is the ‘Foodies Festival Madness’. Local restaurants have pulled together to create some great offers which will run from the 10th- 23rd August. Join us for a wander round the stalls, trade secrets with chefs at the cookery demonstrations and enjoy food from around the world, all on your doorstep. (top) 05.08.08 It’s all fun and games Huddersfield Food and Drink Festival organisers are promising lots of free fun for children at this year’s festival. This year there will be loads for the kids to do. The popular Kitchen Academy is back with its cookery workshops. As well as teaching the children how to make fantastic dishes such as Omelettes, Mexican Quesadilla, Cheesecake, they are bringing their ‘Smoothie Bike’ which is a novel way of exercising and getting a healthy reward. There is also an opportunity for children to get inside the Human Fruit Machine and win healthy prizes or watch some gastronomic experiments and learn how some of our food came around. All of the Kitchen Academy workshops are supported by NHS Kirklees, Public Health Food Programme. Throughout the 4 days there will be many chances to see the Huddersfield Circle of Magicians who will be performing around the festival all day doing magic, balloon modelling, juggling and puppet performances. For the last day of the festival there will be some special performances by Chol Theatre. They will take you back to 1908 when the British Olympic team had huge medal winning success. Tea is served to you by a troupe of anxious servants under the watchful eye of Mr Webb, the butler. Under the surface of the nicely pressed table cloths, is the more than tea brewing? Amidst polite chat about etiquette and Edwardian culture, other matters are stirring. Could the British Empire itself be challenged by talk of workers’ rights and votes for women? This will give the whole family a chance to sit and have afternoon tea while a drama is unfolded in front of them. The Festival which runs from Thursday 13th – Sunday 16th August in St George’s Square also features a food court, free cookery demonstrations and plenty of food and drink stalls. Look out for the Foodies Festival Madness promotion running in local restaurants. Certificates were presented to businesses in many different categories at the ceremony which was held at the Huddersfield Central Lodge. Overall winners were McNulty’s Funeral Service of New North Parade who were presented with Huddersfield Civic Society Rose Bowl for Floral Excellence. Assistant Town Centre Manager Julia Lilof said ‘the award ceremony is our way of saying thank you to all the businesses that help make Huddersfield a nice place to live, work and do business. The town has looked really lovely this summer. Weather conditions have meant that hanging baskets and planters have lasted five weeks longer this year.’ Local business woman, Vicky Devlin from Shaw & Hallas said ‘the displays this year that were provided by Kirklees Bradley Nurseries were the best we have ever had and really helped enhance the visitor’s experience in the town and made our town centre more attractive”. Prizes of £250, £150. and £100 towards environmental improvements which were sponsored by Kirklees Environment Unit were also awarded by Jim Porter of the Green Business Network to the winners of the Green Business Awards. First prize went to TransPennine Express, second prize to Term Time Wear and third prize t to Huddersfield Central Lodge. Jim Porter remarked that “All the winners had worked hard to reduce their environmental impact, and are a great example of the initiatives that businesses and organisations can take to save money by reducing their energy, water, waste disposal and transport costs, whilst responding to the increasing demand from customers to purchase more sustainably. The judges were particularly impressed with the amount of materials being recycled, with many businesses sending nearly 100% of their waste for recycling. Batley and Dewsbury businesses are also reducing their energy use and cutting their costs by the use of, for example, energy saving bulbs, movement sensors, timers on equipment, and most importantly starting to introduce a culture change in their organisations so that everyone can contribute to energy saving."
