With Christmas fast approaching Huddersfield Town Centre Partnership are again looking for performers to help bring a festive feel to late night and weekend shopping in the run up to Christmas. The Partnership is looking for local performers to play on Thursday evenings, Saturdays and Sundays. Town Centre Manager Cathy Burger says ‘the town has traditionally benefited from brass bands and choirs playing and singing in the town. For the second year we are offering those the opportunity to be included on our Christmas brochure and have a listing on our website. We will also be happy to assist people with collection licenses’. Cathy added, ‘Christmas in Huddersfield is set to be better than ever. We have the Christmas Light Switch-on with The Pulse radio roadshow on Thursday 13th November with Billy Pearce and Santa turning on the lights followed by this years Festival Of Light on Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd November. The fun doesn’t stop there either because the ever popular ice-rink is returning on 4th December. Shopping during the run up to Christmas can be quiet a stressful business. We hope that by having plenty going on in the town the task will become more pleasurable and people will be encouraged to come to Huddersfield to shop’. Her stall will be up on New Street and Sylvia will also be doing a cookery demonstration down at the Piazza between 1pm and 2pm. It was an article in the Examiner in April about Sylvia’s cookbook that urged the Festival team to get in contact with Sylvia. Cathy Burger, Town Centre Manager, said ‘We couldn’t miss an opportunity like this. Having a local person with such talent, and our Food and Drink Festival occurring about the same time as Sylvia’s book being produced seemed to be just the recipe we needed! We contacted Sylvia and she not only agreed to do a book signing at the Festival, but also agreed to be involved with our Cookery Demonstration theatre. Like most people these days Sylvia is short of time, being a full-time office worker, so it was not until 2006 that she finally got around to starting the book. The ‘Once a Week’ recipes can be made up in one cooking session per week and then frozen, thus evening meals then become quick assembly jobs – some taking just a few minutes to get to the table. This year the Food and Drink Festival is being held on The Piazza and New Street and will be officially opened by The Mayor of Kirklees, Councillor Karam Hussain on Thursday 14th August at 11.15am on the Piazza. The festival continues through until Sunday 17th August and promises to provide lots of delicious goodies as well as entertainment! Other attractions being held include a variety of stalls selling everything from award winning pies, specialist cheeses, local pickles, fabulous pastries, preserves and ice creams, real ales to wine and cider and an open air food court provides the opportunity to try delicacies from around the world. The partnership between Kirklees Council, town centre businesses and key stakeholders including the University, Civic Society and Police has developed into one of the country’s leading partnerships. With 180 members the partnership helps to drive the town’s economic performance and undertakes a wide range of initiatives to improve the perception and vitality of the town. The ATCM itself represents over 550 towns and cities across the country and the judging panel chose Huddersfield from an eventual shortlist of five. The award was presented to Town Centre Manager Cathy Burger and Chairman of the Partnership, John Eastwood, of Eastwood and Partners. Mr Eastwood said: “I am delighted our partnership working has been recognised nationally and congratulate Cathy and her team for their hard work in ensuring we talk up the town for the benefit of all our members. There is a deep commitment from all concerned in driving the town forward, and this award is justly deserved and recognises the hard work put in by the partnership.” This is the second award the Town Centre Management team has won over the past 4 years, the first being the Shopping Centre SCEPTRE award in 2004 for ‘Town Centre Manager of the Year’. Working in partnership, the Police, Community Safety and Town Centre Management are responding to the needs of the night time economy by providing urinals at 2 locations on Friday and Saturday nights. The 2 units that house 4 urinals per unit are located on King St and Victoria Lane and are dropped off at 9pm every Friday and Saturday night and picked up at 6.30am every morning. The trial is to run for 10 weeks and will monitor the need of toilet provision in the town centre for the booming night time economy. Cathy Burger, Town Centre Manager said “Our night time economy has really grown over the past few years and initiatives such as these help provide a solution to some of the challenges we are presented with. We hope that people will make use of them over this very busy period!” The second initiative, being piloted in December aims to provide nourishment and essentials to people heading home in the early hours of the morning. A ‘safe haven van’ selling tea, coffee, water, energy bars, flip flops, condoms and personal alarms at cost will be in town every Friday and Saturday night. This is the first pilot trial of this kind in the UK and if successful, will be rolled out across the country. Contact: Cathy Burger, Town Centre Manager.
