Huddersfield Food and Drink Festival the biggest yet!
West Yorkshire’s biggest food and drink festival, the Huddersfield Food and Drink Festival, in it’s 7th year, continues to attract increasing visitor numbers to the town. This year proved to be the busiest ever and Traders made the following comments.
Andrew Jones the award winning Pie Maker said ‘This was our busiest festival with over 7,000 pies being baked. We even had to reopen the bakery on Saturday to keep up with demand. Even though the weather was against us it didn’t stop people coming out to enjoy the ambiance of the festival’.
A newcomer to the festival this year, Argento’s steakhouse on John William Street was delighted with the outcome of the festival. Robert Mellman, the owner, felt that the festival had helped promote his restaurant in a very cost effective and fun way to the local visitor and due to the interest generated at the festival he is now thinking of starting up a website selling Argentine products.
Patrick Clarke from Elland Brewery remarked ‘What a fantastic event! Elland Brewery had it's busiest year ever’. He put it down to 3 main factors: excellent planning and support from the Town Centre Partnership, the festival being well known and becoming more popular each year and of course the wonderful folk of Yorkshire who (whatever the weather!) enjoy their food and drink. He said ‘ We twice ran out of beer before the close of day; which is a positive sign. We look forward to next year to support this superb event’
Vicky Lee, Marketing Manager from local firm, Continental Wine & Food Ltd, based on Leeds Road said "We were delighted with how the festival went for Vivaldi. 2007 was our second year attending and this time with the weather on our side, the food and wine enthusiasts were out in force to enjoy all that was on offer at the festival. We met some great characters, there was a really buzzing atmosphere and most importantly our sales were excellent too!"
The festival, held in August of each year, is aimed at adding vibrancy to the town centre as well as promoting local business and highlighting to visitors the diverse range of cultures that make up our town. An added attraction is the presence of Kirklees twin town Besançon who support the festival each year.
As well as a variety of stalls the festival also has a large cookery demonstration theatre which allows visitors to sample and learn how to prepare other cultures dishes and to watch how professionals work. This year children were able to learn about the origins of food and the ‘5 a day’ message.
