| Christmas 13.01.04 Community PR Train. The Christmas road train which ran in Huddersfield town centre during the run up to Christmas raised over £1000 for Kirkwood Hospice. The five carriage train took tired shoppers and children around the town for a minimum donation of 10p. Passengers were able to join or leave the train at any one of five stops along the route. Assistant Town Centre Manager Cathy Burger said “the train was sponsored by The Piazza, Kingsgate, Beatties, AM Recruitment, KMC Markets, KMC Environmental Services and Huddersfield Town Centre Association and is a good example of how the town came together to make Christmas really special in Huddersfield. We would particularly like to thank all the passengers and businesses who made such generous donations to the Hospice.” Having proved to be so popular in the town, the train is likely to be back at Easter, running an expanded route possibly including the bus station to test the idea of having a shop-hopper scheme. (top) 07.06.04 Plant Sale Grows! Gardeners will be out in force next weekend, when a plant sale is held again in Huddersfield town centre. The event - now in its fourth year - will run on New Street between 9am and 4pm on Saturday. Organisers say it will be the biggest yet. There will be more than 20 stalls at the event, organised by Huddersfield Town Centre Association and the National Trust. They will sell a large range of hardy plants, annuals and more unusual varieties from specialist nurseries. David Wyles, of the association, said the sale was expected to be popular. "My advice is to arrive early," he added. Mr Wyles said there would be a large choice, with stallholders being able to offer expert advice. "With more nurseries attending and a greater variety of plants, this is a unique chance for gardeners to enjoy a choice rarely available,"he said. (top) 07.04 Bigger Festival The Huddersfield Town Centre Association is bringing the fourth annual Food & Drink Festival to St George’s Square in front of the railway station. The festival takes place from Thursday 19 to Sunday 22 August and will be even bigger than last year. Assistant town centre manager Alison Campbell told us: “The festival has grown to such an extent that we will actually be filling the whole of St George’s Square, including the part in front of the Yorkshire Building Society. This means that a few parking spaces in that area will be suspended from Wednesday." She added: “The small roads around the grassed area will also be closed from Wednesday, and traffic on Railway Street will be reduced to one lane between 8:00am and 6:00pm Thursday through Sunday. We are trying to let people know in advance to minimise inconvenience, and definitely feel that the Festival will more than make up for it!" "We have nearly twice as many marquees this year,” continued Alison. “There will be a huge and changing range of cooked food to enjoy, including Indian, Chinese, Caribbean and English. Many members of the Deliciousl yorkshire group will be bringing their own home-produced cheeses, chutneys, preserves, drinks and meats. And new this year will be a French Market, with cheeses, saucisson, wines, preserves and more. ”Other treats on offer include the popular Cookery Demonstration theatre with seating for up to 80 people, featuring demonstrations of dishes from different countries, celebrity competitions, and hints and tips from local chefs." A Beer and Cider Tasting Evening on Friday 20 August will feature real ales and other drinks from the Head of Steam and Beersinabox.com, as well as a barbecue, curry from Ali Murad, and live music. Tickets are £5.00 and include two free pints. Numbers are limited so advance booking is recommended. All day time events are free and children will be kept entertained by Punch & Judy, roundabouts, face painting and plenty of ice cream. (top) Huddersfield Food & Drink Festival The fourth Huddersfield Food And Drink Festival ran from Thursday 18th until Sunday 22nd August in St George’s Square. This year’s festival was bigger than ever with more than 30 stalls featuring both regional food and foods from around the world including Chinese, Lebanese, Indian, Polish and Caribbean. New for this year was also a French Market which supplied plenty of cheeses, saucisson, wines, bread and preserves. During all three days the main marquee played host to hourly cookery demonstrations by local chefs and celebrities. On Friday night the marquee was the venue for the ever popular Beer evening which featured a wide variety of real ales and ciders from The Head of Steam and BeersInABox.com. Children weren’t forgotten either with regular Punch & Judy shows, face painters and plenty of ice cream to keep them entertained. Organisers are already looking forward to next year’s festival. It will take place from Thursday 18th until Sunday 21st August and promises to be even bigger. (top) 28.10.04 Pride of the Pennines Vintage Vehicle Show, Sunday 31 October 2004 Organisers of a vintage vehicle show, being staged in Huddersfield Town Centre this Sunday, are hoping it will be the best yet. The Huddersfield and District Transport Museum Society has invited enthusiasts from all over the country to display their vehicles at Springwood car park and St George’s Square. Now in its 3rd year the event has attracted historic commercial vehicles, cars and buses including a 1950’s red Huddersfield Corporation double decker bus. Larger vehicles are on display at Springwood while classic cars will congregate in St George’s Square. A vintage bus will transport people to and from these locations and there will be longer trips for the enjoyment of both enthusiasts and families. The event complements an Auto Jumble which will be held at the Open Market during the morning and the many shops that now open on Sundays. Mel Munday, organiser of the event said, ‘The popularity of this event demonstrates the continuing pleasure both young and old have for these classic vehicles. Many proud owners will be coming to Huddersfield on Sunday and we hope it will provide an extra attraction for local people. ’Vehicles will be on display and rides available from mid morning to mid afternoon.
