Graffiti

Town Centre Graffiti Clean Up Supported
£10,000 has been earmarked to address a recent outbreak of graffiti around Huddersfield Town Centre.

The money has been awarded to Huddersfield Town Centre Association by Kirklees Community Safety Partnership to tackle both public and private property that has been targeted by graffiti vandals.

Assistant Town Centre Manager Cathy Burger said "we need to present Huddersfield as a clean, welcoming and safe town which people want to visit, shop and do business. This money will help us tackle the problem head on, as well as working more closely with partners within the Council and police to address the problem in the longer term".

The Association is also launching the 2003 Tidy Trader competition, which hopes many town centre retailers will participate in. The competition will judge the cleanliness and efforts to maintain a well cared for feel of premises. A cup is to be awarded by Huddersfield Civic Society for the best overall entry later in the year.

Travel Agency Aims To Clean Up In Huddersfield
The writing is on the wall for vandals as a Huddersfield travel agency prepares to 'clean up' in the town centre in a bid to raise money for sick children.

Four staff from Travelcare, the UK’s largest independent travel agency, will spend a day removing graffiti from Market Walk, one of Huddersfield’s main shopping streets, but sadly one of the area's graffiti trouble spots. Bradford Decorators Merchants have donated the paint that the team will use.

Part of the Co-operative Group, Travelcare is hoping to raise around £300 for the Association of Children's Hospices by staging the fund-raiser on Sunday July 6.

The organisation's 390 branches throughout the UK are aiming to collectively raise £100,000 by staging their own charity events.

However the money raised by the Huddersfield branch will directly benefit the nearest hospice or funding home care in its area.

Maria Haigh, Huddersfield branch manager said, "The town centre has a fairly serious graffiti problem and we want to do our bit to try to clean up the area. If we can make some inroads into removing graffiti and at the same time raise cash for sick children then all the better"

The Travelcare challenge is part of an ambitious staff charity push by the Co-operative Group, which hopes to raise half a million pounds for the Association of Children's Hospices over the summer months.

Plant Sale

Huddersfield Plant Sale Blooms Again
Organisers of Huddersfield's Plant Sale are promising more stalls and a larger range of garden and houseplants with two Plant Sales this year on Saturday 7 June and Saturday 19 July.

Huddersfield Town Centre Association and the National Trust Marsden Moor Estate say over 20 stalls will feature at each event along New Street between 9.00am and 4.00pm.

Last year's sale attracted a large number of people with specialist nurseries from as far afield as Nottingham. This year promises even more choice and again is represented by nurseries selling more unusual plants. David Wyles of the Town Centre Association said "Last year people came early and by lunchtime some of the stalls were virtually sold out. With more nurseries attending and a greater variety this is a unique chance for gardeners to enjoy a choice rarely available in the region".

The towns third and biggest plant sale is to be held this Saturday 7 June.

The event, which is organised by Huddersfield Town Centre Association in conjunction with the National Trust Marsden Moor, is an opportunity to purchase a wide variety of plants from growers and nurseries from all over the region and further afield.

The sale takes place on New Street and will run from 9am - 4pm. Julia Lilof of Huddersfield Town Centre Association says 'Our advice to keen gardeners is to get there as early as possible because the best plants go fast!'

Due to popular demand and the success of previous sales a second Plant Sale will be held on Saturday 19 July between 9am-4pm on New Street.
