| Food and Drink Festival 13.08.02 California tasting for town's winebuffs. This year’s Food and Drink Festival is bringing a taste of California to Huddersfield with two evenings of wine tasting. Pickards Wine Merchants, The George Hotel, Sodexho at the Alfred McAlpine Stadium and Huddersfield Town Centre Association are presenting Californian wines from the Robert Mondavi Estates. An expert from Robert Mondavi will be on hand to answer questions. The wine tasting will be accompanied by a three-course buffet. The wine tasting evenings take place on Thursday 29 August at 7.00pm at The Alfred McAlpine Stadium and Friday 30 August at 7.00pm at The George Hotel. Tickets cost £19.50 per person and include a £5 voucher redeemable against a case of wine, ordered and paid for on the night from Pickards or any Christmas bookings made with The George Hotel or The Alfred McAlpine Stadium. (top) 20.08.02 Celebrity Chef To Launch Cookery Demonstrations. Sky TV Chef Clare Bassano will launch four days of Cookery Demonstrations as part of this year’s Huddersfield Food & Drink Festival. Claire who currently presents Good Food Live (UK) will present the first of the free demonstrations at 11am on Wednesday 28th August at St George’s Square following the official opening of the festival by the Mayor of Kirklees. More than 15 other demonstrations will be held in the Cookery Demonstration Theatre between 11am and 4pm from Wednesday 28 August – Saturday 31 August. All of the demonstrations are free and will last approximately 1 hour with seating for up to 60 people. Claire attended Shelley High School and went on to train as a chef before doing a Degree in Food, Nutrition and Health at Leeds University. Over the past six years she has worked on numerous television programmes as a chef, food technologist and most recently as a presenter on Good Food Live (UK Food). The festival, which continues until Sunday 1st September, also features a Farmers’ Market, Food Court, Children’s Party, Gourmet Meal, Wine Tasting a Mini Beerfest and a Sandwich Competition. (top) 20.08.02 Giants v Town Cook Off Huddersfield Giant, Jeff Wittenberg will take on a Huddersfield Town player in a “Ready Steady Cook” style competition as part of the Huddersfield Food & Drink Festival, assisted by Simon Tracherre of Ristorante Sole Mio and Dave Townend of the Hotel & Catering Training Company. The players are due to “Cook Off” at 3pm Wednesday 28 August in the 60-seater cookery demonstration theatre, St George’s Square and will round off the first day of cookery demonstrations. Various demonstrations, including, “Entertaining Made Easy”, “Healthy Cooking on a Budget”, “shaken not Stirred – Making the Perfect Cocktail”, and an appearance by Huddersfield born TV chef Claire Bassano will run hourly between 11am – 5pm from the 28 to 31 August. All demonstrations are FREE. (top) 20.08.02 Gourmet Meal Tempts Food Lovers Some of Huddersfield’s top chefs will be displaying their skills to create a gourmet meal as part of Huddersfield second Food & Drink Festival. Steve Bullock Group Catering Manager at the George Hotel, Michael Weaver, Group Executive Head Chef at Cedar Court Hotels and their team of top chefs will prepare a five course meal accompanied by carefully chosen wines, preceded by a Champagne reception. The event will be held in the historic setting of Huddersfield’s Town Hall and to add to the atmosphere The Occasional String Quartet will play throughout the evening. The Gourmet Meal takes place on Saturday 31 August from 7.30pm. (top) 22.08.02 Mayor To Open Huddersfield Food & Drink Festival The Mayor of Kirklees, Councillor Margaret Bates is to officially open the Huddersfield Food & Drink Festival on Wednesday 28 August at 10.45am. The Official opening will be followed by a cookery demonstration by TV Celebrity Chef Claire Bassano. The centrepiece of the festival is a 60-seater cookery demonstration theatre, which will be situated in St George’s Square. A wide variety of skills will be on show – from the best local chefs, to cake decorating, from flower arrangements, to cooking techniques for those with disabilities. Demonstrations run every hour between 11am to 5pm from Wednesday 28 August until Saturday 31 August and are FREE. Other attractions being held in St George’s Square include a Farmers’ Market on the Wednesday and Thursday selling everything from vegetables to Ostrich Meat, an open air food court on the Friday and Saturday will provide a chance to try delicacies from around the world. Also on the Saturday there is a pizza tossing challenge and local breweries will be pulling the pints at a mini beerfest on the Sunday. Children haven’t been forgotten with a party in St Peter’s Gardens, Byram Street on Thursday with Punch & Judy, bouncy castles and picnic food. Evening events include a Gourmet Meal prepared by chefs from The George Hotel and Cedar Court Hotel. This ticket only event is being held in the historic setting of Huddersfield Town Hall on Saturday 31 August at 7.30pm. (top) 22.08.02 Sue Heaton demonstrates one armed cooking skills for the disabled. Sue Heaton from Disabled Living will be demonstrating her skills at one armed cookery as part of the Huddersfield Food & Drink Festival. Sue will be using her right arm only, to demonstrate how easy it is to make meals such as Minestrone soup and her ‘special’ Trifle. She will also be demonstrating different techniques to help disabled people in the home. A range of tools which help the disabled with cooking will be on show at the end of the presentation. The demonstration begins at 2.00pm on Wednesday 28 August. Disabled Living is one of more than twenty FREE demonstrations which are taking place in the Cookery Demonstration Theatre situated in St George’s Square. (top) 22.08.02 Vote for your favourite festival sandwich. Town Centre Sandwich shops are taking up the challenge again to create a winning festival sandwich as part of the Huddersfield Food and Drink Festival. Customers are being asked to vote for their favourite festival sandwich which has been special created for the Food & Drink Festival. As well as the public vote the sandwiches will be judged by a special panel of judges. The winners of both the public and mystery judging will be entered into the Northern heat of the British Sandwich Association competition to be held later this year. Festival sandwiches are available at Beatties – Kingsgate, Blimpie Subs – The Shambles, Breads – Cross Church Street, Café Espresso – Queensgate Market, Edward’s – Market Avenue, Martello’s – Westgate. Completed voting slips can be left in a ballot box at the Examiner office on Market Street. (top) 24.09.02 Towns Best Sandwich Announced The winners of the Sandwich Competition organised as part of the Huddersfield Town Centre Association Food and Drink Festival have been announced. They are Edward’s Café Bar, Market Avenue and Martello’s, Westgate. The competition was based on votes cast by members of the public and a panel of independent judges. Edward’s received the winning vote from the public for their “Eddie Terranean” which consisted of Mexican spiced chicken on a bed of mixed salad with home made tomato salsa and sour cream in sun dried tomato and parmesan bread. Martello’s won the judge’s vote for the second year running with their “Ciabatta Special”, a delicious blend of garlic, herbs, cheese and ham. Judge, Amanda Hinchliffe of Huddersfield Pride said “all the sandwiches were of a very high standard, and I have no doubt that Huddersfield’s sandwiches are the best in Yorkshire”. Both winners receive certificates and go on to take part in the Northern Heat of the Innovative Sandwich Competition organised by the British Sandwich Association. (top) General Press Releases 23.11.01 Huddersfield Town Centre Association Membership hits 100. The Huddersfield Town Centre Association, established in April 2000 has increased its membership to 100 with the welcome addition of Keys Coffee House which is situated in the crypt below St Peter’s Church. Beverly Ellam proprietor says, “Because The keys is a new business venture in Huddersfield the HTCA has proven to be both informative and supportive. The Association has given me the opportunity to meet fellow members and from that I have increased my over all awareness of business in Huddersfield. It is an honour to be the 100th member. Here’s to the next 100!” Cathy Burger of Huddersfield Town Centre Association states that “ our rise in membership indicates that more businesses are recognising that a co-ordinated approach to the marketing and promotion of the town increases its vitality.” The Huddersfield Town Centre Association is now keen to increase their membership to 110 by the end of the year. (top) 07.03.02 Mothering Sunday To celebrate Mothering Sunday Town Crier, Mr Vic Watson will be distributing 300 carnations in the New Street area of town at 12.00, on behalf of Huddersfield Town Centre Association. The flowers have been provided by the Occasion Shop on Market Avenue. The event is part of the Huddersfield Open Sunday campaign which aims to promote Sunday shopping in Huddersfield town centre. Shops that are open in the town include Woolworths, Marks & Spencers, Topshop/Topman, Wilkinsons. Several more shops will also be opening Sunday’s in the Kingsgate Shopping Centre. The St Patrick’s Day parade is also taking place in the town this Sunday. (top) 24.07.02 'That's The Way To Do It' Punch and juddy extravaganza comes to Huddersfield Town Centre. Throughout the day traditional Punch & Judy acts will entertain shoppers and visitors to the town. ‘Zoot’ the acrobat/unicyclist/juggler will amaze onlookers with his show between performances. Organiser Les Clarke of Properpunch said “Huddersfield Town Crier, Vic Watson will announce each show and do his best to keep all the puppets on their best behaviour.” Les from Slaithwaite said “It’s a great opportunity for families to see several different Punch & Judy shows and the public can be assured that no sausages will be harmed during the performances!” The event, which is being promoted by Huddersfield Town Centre Association, is being held at Nelson Mandela Corner between 11am & 4pm. (top) 16.05.02 Boost For Sunday Opening - Huddersfield Jazz and Blues Festival. Those looking for something a bit different this Sunday can combine shopping with a visit to the 5th Huddersfield Jazz and Blues Festival which is organised by Huddersfield Town Centre Association member The Head of Steam in St George’s Square. The festival begins this Sunday at 12 noon with a performance by the internationally acclaimed Trombonist Roy Williams, will provide the perfect lunch break. The festival runs until the 23rd May. More and more shops are opening on Sundays in Huddersfield, including some new additions to Kingsgate. Julia Lilof of Huddersfield Town Centre Management said “increasing numbers are visiting Huddersfield on Sundays not just for shopping but for a variety of other reasons, which add to the towns unique Sunday offer.” Examples include Bramleys, Boultons and Brearley Greens all open for those searching for property, the George Hotel, Huddersfield Hotel and other restaurants open for Sunday lunch and Vision Express for eye testing. (top) 16.10.02 Pride of the Pennines Vintage Vehicle Show Comes to Huddersfield Town Centre. A major show of vintage vehicles is expected to attract the crowds to Huddersfield on Sunday 27 October. The Pride of The Pennines Vintage Vehicle Show will feature over 100 classic and vintage cars, historic commercial vehicles, buses, coaches, motorcycles tractors and stationary engines along streets throughout the town centre. Many of the vehicles have appeared in films and television programmes, and will be arriving from as far afield as Lanarkshire. Visitors can enjoy a ride on a Vintage bus which will be taking passengers from St George’s Square to Slaithwaite from lunchtime. Judges will be awarding prizes to the best vehicles at the Head of Steam between 4.30-5pm. Julia Lilof of Huddersfield Town Centre Management said “we hope this will become a major annual event and expect a really bustling atmosphere with the added attraction of many open shops and free parking.
