Town Centre Working Group
Along with Huddersfield Civic Society HTCPL is the only private sector representative on this group which considers the priorities and strategy for Streetscape improvements.

The HTCPL was the first body to be involved with regard to the major proposals affecting the northern sector of the town. The HTCPL has been involved in improvement proposals along King Street, John William Street, Byram Street and Victoria Lane.

Transportation Strategy
The Transportation Strategy (2006) (replacing the Car Parking Strategy 2002) addresses members’ views about one of the key issues influencing the economic viability of the town. KC has adopted a number of its recommendations including:
• Introduction of Variable Message Signing (VMS) on the ring road, highlighting
available parking
• Alfred Street Car Park becoming a Pay on Foot
• Introduction of the Free Town Bus

The current Transportation Strategy was presented to the Council in September 2006 and focuses on the following:
• Long Stay car parking
• Contract parking
• Evening parking
• Ring road
• Park and ride
• M62 Motorway access

Developments in Huddersfield Town Centre

Highways Meetings
A quarterly meeting between the HTCPL Chair and officers from KC Environment and Transportation Services to discuss issues affecting parking, access, improvements and disruption. Issues under discussion include those items in the current Transportation Strategy.

Huddersfield Renaissance Town
The HTCPL is involved in consultation associated with the Renaissance Town Programme and Developments which support future investment including Queensgate, St George’s Warehouse and the Waterfront developments.

It is currently being consulted on key public realm improvements, namely:
• St George’s Square
• St Peter’s Gardens

Streetcare / Street Audits
The Streetcare initiative established by KC works closely with the HTCPL to tackle cleansing and highway problems and has made a noticeable difference to the town centre. As a cross-service initiative, Streetcare highlights the benefits of ‘joined-up working’. The HTCPL has part funded the removal of graffiti, flyposting, repainting of street furniture and cleansing of underpasses.

Rail / Bus Partnership
Town Centre Management is involved with the working group to increase awareness and promote usage of public transport and improve the promotion of the town centre.
